Description
It is a North American butterfly of the family nymphalidae. It is the official state insect of the U.S. State of Maryland since 1973. Their uppersides are black with red-orange crescents on outer margins of both wings and rows of creamy white spots inward.
Dimensions
Their wingspan ranges from 1.7 to 2.7 inches.
Diet
They eat the nectar from flowers of milkweed, viburnum, and wild rose.
Habitat & Range
They inhabit wet meadows, bogs, and marshes in the northeast part; and dry open or wooded hillsides in the southwest. They are very widespread and can be found in Nova Scotia west across the Great Lakes region to southeast Manitoba; south through the eastern United States to northern Georgia, northern Mississippi, and northeast Oklahoma. There are isolated records in northeast Texas and Nebraska.
Conservation status
Some regional populations may be declining.
